1,150 machines, 37 tables, 19 poker tables and a two-story sportsbook with DraftKings: the formula that skyrocketed the business in its first year.
New Hampshire has one of the most unique gaming models in the United States: casinos operate under a charitable gaming license, which means that a fixed portion of gross gaming revenues is mandatory for non-profit organizations. In this framework, The Nash has achieved in just twelve months what took other operators a decade: to become the state's reference establishment.
The jump was not accidental. From its opening, management approached the project as a full-fledged regional casino—not an expanded gaming hall—and executed continuous product expansion throughout the first year of operation.
Floor growth in real time
The inventory of machines went from just over 1,000 units at the opening to 1,150 at the close of the first year. The mix is revealing: around 70% are VLTs and the remaining 30% corresponds to historical horse racing (HHR) terminals, a combination that allows us to offer a modern catalog without giving up the legally consolidated format in the state.
The tables followed the same curve: from 34 to 37 gambling positions, plus 19 tables dedicated exclusively to poker. That poker room has become a reputational asset; With regular tournaments and multi-level cash games, it attracts a repeat player who visits the casino several times a week and consumes food and drinks at each session.
A two-story sportsbook
The deal with DraftKings gave The Nash a two-level brick-and-mortar sportsbook with large-format screens, distinct seating areas and full bar service. Sports betting is not the largest generator of margin in the business, but it fulfills a structural function: it fills the premises at times that were previously dead, especially during the NFL and NBA seasons, and attracts a younger demographic profile than that of the machine floor.
The combined effect of the sportsbook and the poker room has smoothed out the seasonality of the business, a classic problem for regional casinos in the northeastern United States.
Massachusetts, the real market
More than half of The Nash's customers cross the border from Massachusetts. The location—close to the main arteries that connect with the Boston metropolitan area—makes the casino a convenient alternative to the large resorts in the neighboring state, with less travel time and an environment perceived as more accessible.
The management has built its marketing on that geographical reality, with event programming designed for the visitor who arrives by car in the afternoon and returns the same night, and with a loyalty program designed to reward frequency rather than betting volume.
The beneficial component as a differential
The great distinguishing factor of The Nash is not in the playing floor but in its distribution model. Every month the casino holds a public ceremony to present checks to associated organizations, an event that has become both a public relations and community bonding tool.
The most significant decision was voluntary: reducing the days assigned per beneficiary entity from ten to five. In practice, that means less money per organization but access to the program for twice as many local causes. The result is a much broader network of beneficiaries—youth sports clubs, veterans associations, food banks, educational programs—that acts as the social base of the business.
In a sector where the social license to operate is increasingly fragile, this distribution architecture explains much of the rapid rise of The Nash and the little political resistance that its expansion has encountered.
