The Rohnert Park complex, in Sonoma County, completes one of the most ambitious expansions in Northern California and reinforces its commitment to comprehensive entertainment.
Just over an hour north of San Francisco, in Rohnert Park, Graton Resort & Casino has completed its most ambitious expansion since its opening. The resort, owned by the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria Tribe and operated in partnership with Station Casinos, reinforces its position as Northern California's largest gaming destination and a weekend stop for visitors to the Sonoma Wine Valley.
The logic of expansion is the same that dominates the industry in the United States: the casino remains the financial engine, but what decides the visit—and the length of the stay—is everything around the gaming room.
Two thousand more machines and a reorganized gaming floor
The heart of the expansion is the incorporation of around 2,000 new slot machines, which considerably increase the total capacity of the gaming floor. The layout has been redesigned with wider hallways, high ceilings and areas differentiated by denomination, a trend that replaces the windowless maze of the previous generation of casinos.
The catalog combines the large linked progressives that dominate the US market with recent mechanical titles and cutting-edge cabinets, in addition to an expanded high-stakes area with its own access and service, a segment that contributes a disproportionate margin compared to the space it occupies.
The roof terrace as a new living room
The most talked about addition is not on the playing floor, but on the deck. The new rooftop restaurants, with outdoor terraces, fire pits and open views of the valley, seek to capture an audience that does not necessarily come in to play but consumes, stays and returns.
The gastronomic bet is completed with a deliberately varied offering: market cuisine with local products from Sonoma County, high-turnover informal proposals and a gourmet donut bakery that has become an attraction in itself, with lines that form before the casino reaches its peak hour.
The comprehensive resort model
The expansion also includes more hotel capacity, new event spaces and a renovated pool and spa area. The stated objective is to convert a three-hour visit into a two-day stay, with a significantly higher average expense per visitor.
It's the same strategy that America's large tribal resorts have followed over the past decade: diversifying revenues beyond gaming to reduce exposure to economic cycles and compete with leisure destinations that have never had a slot machine.
Regional impact
For Sonoma County, the expansion means several hundred additional jobs and an increase in hotel and restaurant activity in the immediate area. The tribe has highlighted that revenue from the complex funds housing, health and education programs for its members.
The move also reorders Northern California's competitive map, where gaming offerings are concentrated among tribal properties that compete less and less for the machine and more and more for the full experience.
