The 10 largest casinos in the world, measured in square meters

Size remains a calling card in the gaming industry. When measuring the surface area dedicated exclusively to the casino floor—not the entire resort—the global leadership is held by WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma, with around 55,700 m² of gaming space (600,000 square feet) and a collection of more than 10,000 slot machines, the largest on the planet.

The most revealing fact in the ranking is not the first place, but rather geography: seven of the ten largest casinos in the world are in Macau. The former Portuguese colony concentrates a density of gaming space that no other jurisdiction, not even Las Vegas, has managed to replicate.

The following table ranks the ten halls by gaming area, with their conversion to square meters and the hotel capacity of each complex.

Owned by the Chickasaw Nation and opened in 2003, WinStar is an outlier: it does not compete on luxury, it competes on volume. Its 155 gaming tables pale in comparison to the more than 10,000 slot machines spread across themed plazas that mimic world cities—Paris, Rome, Beijing, Madrid—a scenographic design that turns the tour into a kind of theme park of chance.

The complex features the Global Event Center, with capacity for concerts and large-scale shows, and the WinStar Golf Club. Its operating currency is exclusively the US dollar, and its audience is mostly regional: Texas, with no commercial casinos, fuels a large part of the traffic.

Opened in 2007 by Las Vegas Sands, the Venetian Macau reverses the logic of WinStar: 800 gaming tables compared to 3,400 slot machines. It is the exact translation of the Asian gaming culture, where baccarat dominates revenue and the machine is a complement, not the core of the business.

With 3,000 rooms, it is also the largest hotel in the ranking. The Cotai Arena, with a capacity for around 15,000 people, has hosted concerts by Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Céline Dion, and serves as the entertainment anchor of the complex.

The comparison between both models is more interesting than the ranking. In Macau, the table rules: Galaxy Macau has 650 tables, City of Dreams 496, Wynn Palace 350. In the United States, the machine rules: WinStar concentrates two-thirds of its floor on slot machines.

This difference has concrete operational consequences. A table floor requires staff—croupiers, supervisors, security—and generates revenue per table yield; a machine floor scales with almost no marginal staff cost and is optimized with software. It is in this second area where technology has rewritten the business over the last decade: progressive jackpot systems, networked jackpot management, and real-time behavioral analytics.

MGM Cotai (46,452 m², opened in 2018) bet on 3D and jackpot slots to differentiate itself in a market saturated with baccarat, in addition to the MGM Theater as a platform for shows.

Wynn Palace (39,391 m², 2006) plays the card of pure luxury: a spa, a cable car over a lake with a fountain show, and a roulette and blackjack offering geared toward premium players. City of Dreams Macau (39,019 m², 2009, by Melco Resorts) built its identity around the Dancing Water Theatre and its aquatic show.

Galaxy Macau (37,161 m²) closes the block with 650 tables, 1,500 machines, and an entertainment strategy that included UFC nights, an explicit attempt to attract a young audience to the gaming floor.

Mohegan Sun (33,817 m², Connecticut) and Foxwoods Resort Casino (31,959 m²) are the two giants of tribal management on the East Coast of the United States. Both were born under the protection of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and proved that a casino could single-handedly sustain the economy of a sovereign nation.

Wynn Macau (27,313 m²) and Ponte 16 (25,084 m²) represent the Macau prior to the Cotai boom: more compact floors, a location on the historic peninsula, and a clientele more tied to gaming than to entertainment.

A methodological warning is in order: surface area figures come from the operators themselves and statistical compilations, and they do not always measure the same thing. Some include circulation zones and bars within the floor; others only count the area with tables and machines. This is why different figures circulate for WinStar—between 48,000 and 55,700 m²—depending on the source.

And above all: size does not equal revenue. The Venetian Macau, with less surface area than WinStar, generates a much higher gross gaming revenue thanks to the average bet volume of the Asian player. In this industry, square meters are a headline; yield per square meter is the business.
